Italian Premier Mario Draghi has resigned after key coalition allies boycotted a confidence vote, signaling the likelihood of early elections.
The Prime Minister tendered his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella at a morning meeting at the Quirinale Palace. The President’s office said it had acknowledged Draghi’s resignation and asked the government to remain on in a caretaker fashion.
Draghi’s government collapsed on Thursday after members of his shaken coalition of right, left, and populist rejected his appeal to come back together to finish the legislature’s natural term and ensure implementation of the European Union-funded pandemic recovery program.
