Heavy rainfall on Sunday triggered widespread flooding across parts of Niger State, submerging farmlands and displacing residents in at least 18 communities. The state government has called for the urgent evacuation of people living in vulnerable areas.
The early morning downpour devastated farmlands in Kafin Koro, Paikoro Local Government Area, and left entire communities in Lapai LGA inundated, placing more households and agricultural lands at further risk.
In response to the disaster, the government reiterated its earlier warnings, urging residents in riverine and low-lying areas to relocate immediately to safer ground, citing intensified rainfall patterns across the state.
In a statement on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Communication, Media and Strategy, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, appealed to residents to prioritize their safety over sentimental attachment to ancestral homes.
He referenced earlier alerts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which identified 15 out of the state’s 25 LGAs as highly flood-prone.
The state government pledged to continue monitoring the situation closely and to coordinate emergency response efforts aimed at minimizing the impact of the disaster.
