Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced plans to resign despite her Social Democrats being set to remain the strongest force in Denmark following the results of parliamentary elections.
The 44-year-old announced to party supporters in Copenhagen in the early hours of Wednesday that she will step down as prime minister and consider the idea of a wide coalition administration.
According to the Prime Minister, regardless of the fact that this kind of government is uncommon in Denmark, it is the best approach in view of the current crises.
Although the Social Democrats were once again the most powerful party, winning 27.5% of the vote in their greatest showing in 20 years, Ms Frederiksen told supporters that it was obvious that a majority of the population does not support the administration in its current shape.
Given the outcome of the election, Frederiksen was probably going to be given the go-ahead once more to establish a new administration.
