At least 141 people lost their lives when a suspension bridge collapsed over a river in western India.
According to local media, the event happened on Sunday night in Morbi, a city in the Gujarat state of western India. According to the report, the bridge fell after being just reopened following renovations, and at least 141 people perished and 177 were rescued.
A police official said at least 132 people died, 100 were injured, and several others still missing. The report also said about 500 people were on the 232-metre-long suspension bridge at the time of the collapse.
Social media posts included images and videos of the pedestrian bridge collapsing in the centre with numerous people clinging to it to keep from plummeting into the water.
Gujarat’s Labor Minister, Brijesh Merja, has reassured the public that an investigation into the accident has been launched. The office of the Prime Minister also announced on Twitter that families of the victims will receive compensation.
