AKWA UNITED COACH, KENNEDY BOBOYE TASK TEAM AHEAD OF NPFL SEASON

Akwa United Coach, Kennedy Boboye says his team will take it one game at a time as they bid to win the Nigeria Professional Football League title for the second successive season

Speaking after leading his team to a three-nil win over Kano Pillars in the first game of the new season, Boboye said the defending champions expect tougher challenges this season and are ready to face them as they come.

Also speaking, Kano Pillars Coach Ibrahim Musa expressed disappointment at his team’s display but assured that the players will improve in subsequent games.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PROBE POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION OVER N1BN EXTRA-BUDGETARY SPENDING.

The House of Representatives Committee on public accounts has set up a Sub-Committee to investigate alleged N1.066bn extra-budgetary spending and others by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The Committee frowned at alleged payment of funds into some private accounts of the psc officials allegedly not retired.

The Chairman of the Committee Wole Oke stated this in Abuja at the public hearing based on audit queries by the office of the auditor-general for the federation.

PSC Permanent Secretary, Williams Alo and Director of Finance and Account, Brighten Saagwe both made oral defence of the expenditures which followed an earlier written presentation by the commission.

In the written Defence, the PSC said the money received from the service wide vote was utilised to pay severance allowances of the Former Chairman and two full-time members of the Commission whose tenure expired on April, 14, 2013.

INEC SOLICITS FOR N305BN TO CONDUCT 2023 ELECTIONS

The Senate Committee on Appropriations has said that the 2022 Budget would be presented and considered on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano) disclosed this while briefing newsmen after a meeting with the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The INEC boss and his team were at the senate on the invitation of the Committee to get the Commission’s needs for the General Elections included in the 2022 Appropriation Bill.

Earlier during a session with the senate committee, Mahmood Yakubu told the lawmakers that INEC would need N305 billion for the conduct of 2023 General Elections as well as off-circle elections scheduled for 2022.

Mahmood noted that the 2022 Appropriation Bill had made provision for the sum of N140 billion of which N40 billion is for the regular budget of the Commission while the remaining N100 billion is for the preparation of the 2023 General Elections.

Governor Udom Emmanuel Signs 2022 Appropriation Bill into Law.

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel has signed the State’s 2022 Appropriation Law, with a total outlay of N586.9 billion.

The budget, christened, ‘redefining standards’, was passed by the State House of Assembly on Thursday, December 2, 2021 with an increase of N4.766 billion, representing 0.8%, from the initial estimate of N582.115 billion presented by the Governor on October 25, 2021.

The Appropriation Act’s size covers N261.963 billion of recurrent and N324.918 billion of capital expenditures.

Governor Emmanuel, while speaking during an expanded Executive Council Meeting, commended the State House of Assembly, Ministry of Finance, Budget Office, Accountant General and other Government Agencies involved in the budgetary process for its timely passage.

The Governor said it became expedient to sign the Bill early enough in the week to allow for smooth winding down of the year 2021 and take-off 2022, considering nearness to Christmas, the accompanying holidays and envisaged reduced productivity of the State’s predominantly Christian workforce.

Speaking further, the Governor directed that the State Accountant General, Pastor Andrew Essien, ensures payment of  Salaries and Pension of Public Servants and Retirees in the State on or Before Thursday, 23th 2021, to support their yuletide celebration.

Also at the expanded Executive Council, Governor Emmanuel was formally presented with the recent Cleanest State Award Trophy won by the State for the fourth consecutive years.

The Governor commended the Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, Prince Ikim for making the State proud, tasking the agency to brace up for greater exploits in coming years.

Reigning Champions Manchester City recorded their eighth successive Premier League victory as they swept aside struggling Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The League Leaders were gifted a fifth-minute opener as Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark failed to attack Joao Cancelo’s hooked cross and Ruben Dias had a simple task to head city ahead.

City doubled their lead in the 27th minute when Cancelo collected the ball 35 yards out, beat two Newcastle players and fired an unstoppable strike into the top corner from outside the penalty area.

Riyad Mahrez scored his 50th Premier League goal for the club in the 63rd minute, superbly volleying in Oleksandr Zinchenko’s cross for City’s third.

NDLEA Arrests Expectant Mother with Imported Skunk

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 27-year-old expectant mother, Eze Joy Chioma, for possessing 1,442 Kilogramms of imported skunk in Lagos.

The Agency said four men, including 62-year-old Basset Emmanuel, were arrested with 182,000 tablets of tramadol.

Its spokesman, Femi Babafemi, in a statement, said they were arrested by operatives who raided two clandestine drug stores in Lagos.

He said in similar raids across eight other States of Rivers, Kogi, Benue, Adamawa, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti and Ondo, over 4,000 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs were seized.

ALL SCHOOLS IN WUSHISHI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF NIGER STATE TO CLOSE OVER PLANNED BANDITRY ATTACK.

The Chairman, Wushishi Local Government Area of Niger State, Danjuma Suleiman Nalango, has ordered the closure of all public and private primary, secondary and tertiary schools in the Local Government Area over a planned banditry attack on Schools to abduct school children in Zungeru and Neighbouring Communities.

The Council Chairman told newsmen via telephone that there was an intelligence report by the Security Agencies that armed bandits in their numbers were planning to strike in the day at Niger State Polytechnic and Government Girls Day Secondary School, both located in the outskirt of Zungeru town.

He said the measure was to avoid a repeat of what happened in Tegina where Islamiyyh pupils were abducted.

He, however, noted that they are aware of the inconveniences considering the importance of education, especially now that schools were about to write their promotion examinations.

Nalango said Zungeru in particular had been threatened by bandits in recent times.

LAGOS STATE POLICE COMMAND RELEASES REMAINS OF SYLVESTER OROMONI, FOR BURIAL.

The Lagos State Police Command has released the remains of the late student of Dowen College, Sylvester Oromoni, for burial.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said the release followed the conclusion of an autopsy on the corpse to ascertain the cause and nature of death.

Sylvester’s body was moved to Lagos on Monday from delta state for the autopsy at a public facility in the Nation’s commercial hub.

The autopsy was carried out in the presence of five parties: the victim’s parents, parents of the alleged students, the school’s representatives, the police investigators while representatives from the Ministry of Health stood in for the Lagos State Government.

ILLICIT CONSUMPTION OF DRUGS: Medical Expert Warn Youths Against Drug Abuse.

A medical expert in Uyo the Akwa Ibom State capital has expressed worry over the high rate of youths indulgence in drug use and abuse.

Doctor Adeyeye Taiwo has described the development as unfortunate, unhealthy and unaccepted.

SUPER EAGLES CAMP TO OPEN IN UYO DECEMBER 28

The Super Eagles will begin preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Uyo on December 28.

According to reports, the team will train in the Akwa Ibom State’s Capital before moving to Garoua, Cameroon venue of their group games.

There are also plans for the Super Eagles to play at least three warm-up games before the start of the competition.

Interim Head Coach Austine Eguaveon will take charge of the team following the sacking of German Tactician Gernot Rohr on Sunday.

The Super Eagles have been drawn in group D of the competition alongside Egypt, Sudan and Guniea-Bissau.

The three-time champions will open their campaign against the Pharaohs of Egypt at the Roumde Adija Stadium, on Monday, January 11.

The West Africans will then face Sudan four days later, before their final fixture against Guinea-Bissau on January 19.
