Abba Yusuf To Tinubu: Kano Will Benefit From Stronger Federal Collaboration

0

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has told President Bola Tinubu that the state stands to gain significantly from enhanced collaboration with the federal government, particularly in the areas of security, infrastructure, and development.

Governor Yusuf made this known during a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu on Monday, where he presented his administration’s key priorities and outlined pressing challenges facing Kano State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the governor’s spokesperson, Sunisu Bature, said the meeting provided an opportunity to formally brief the president on the worsening security situation in some local government areas of the state.

“He informed President Tinubu about the recent tragic killing of a housewife and her children, stressing the need for decisive federal support to strengthen security operations and protect innocent citizens,” the statement said.

The governor highlighted the role of the Kano State Neighbourhood Watch Corps in supporting conventional security agencies and called for deeper collaboration with federal security institutions to improve safety across the state.

Yusuf also discussed his administration’s development agenda, placing emphasis on major infrastructure projects aimed at stimulating economic growth and creating jobs.

According to the statement, the governor expressed appreciation for federal intervention on the Wujuwuju Road project, describing it as a critical step toward unlocking economic opportunities and improving connectivity.

Bature said the governor sought President Tinubu’s support to fast-track ongoing and proposed federal projects in Kano, while ensuring the state benefits fully from federal programmes and investments.

He added that President Tinubu assured Governor Yusuf of the federal government’s readiness to work closely with the Kano State Government to address insecurity and promote sustainable development across the state.

NNPP Will Win Kano In 2027 Even If Gov Yusuf Joins APC, Says Chieftain

0

The New Nigeria Peoples Party has expressed confidence that it will win the Kano governorship election in 2027, even if Governor Abba Yusuf defects to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Speculation has intensified in recent days over the governor’s possible exit from the NNPP, following his recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu, which sparked renewed discussions about a planned defection.

However, NNPP chieftain Ladipo Johnson said the party remains undeterred, insisting it has built strong political structures in Kano capable of delivering victory in the next election cycle.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Johnson recalled the party’s past electoral performances in the state.

“In 2019, without a sitting governor or members of the House of Assembly, etc, we believe we won Kano, but yes, INEC said it was inconclusive, and later on Ganduje won a re-election. In 2023, same position. We went up against the APC, and well, His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf knows that he won the elections,” he said.

He added that the NNPP achieved its 2023 victory without holding key political offices at the time.

“NNPP won the elections, won most of the seats, and we did this without having anyone in situ, any officials in situ, no councillors, nothing.

“We were able to win Kano, and by God’s special grace, in 2027, the same thing will happen whether or not he has left us or whether he’s with us. And that sounds slightly arrogant. I’m not being arrogant. I’m just saying it’s politics, and I believe that we will be able to win Kano,” Johnson said.

Governor Yusuf’s visit to President Tinubu on Monday had reignited claims that he was preparing to leave the NNPP for the APC.

But his spokesperson, Sunisu Bature, dismissed the defection rumours, explaining that the closed-door meeting was aimed at briefing the president on governance issues in Kano.

According to Bature, the governor discussed his administration’s plans and challenges, including security concerns.

“Governor Yusuf informed President Tinubu about the recent tragic killing of a housewife and her children, stressing the need for decisive federal support to strengthen security operations and protect innocent citizens,” he said.

Yusuf won the Kano governorship election in 2023 on the platform of the NNPP, defeating APC candidate Yusuf Gawuna.

In recent months, reports of his possible defection have grown, alongside indications of a strained relationship between the governor and the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Ex-Minister Diezani Appears In London Court For £100,000 Bribery Trial

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has appeared before the Southwark Crown Court in London for the preliminary hearing of her bribery trial.

Alison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria’s oil minister between 2010 and 2015, is the first woman to have held the position and also the first female president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

The case was listed on Monday before Justice Thornton in Court 8, where Alison-Madueke attended preliminary proceedings ahead of the commencement of her full trial scheduled for January 26, 2026.

The preliminary phase covers technical matters, including case management issues and jury selection. The substantive trial is expected to last between 10 and 12 weeks.

The 65-year-old former minister has been on bail since her arrest in London in October 2015. She has pleaded not guilty to six counts of bribery brought against her.

In 2023, the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) formally charged Alison-Madueke with offences relating to the acceptance of bribes during her tenure as Nigeria’s oil minister between 2011 and 2015.

“We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts,” the NCA said at the time of filing the charges.

According to the indictment, Alison-Madueke allegedly benefitted from at least £100,000 in cash, chauffeur-driven vehicles, private jet flights, and the use of multiple properties in London.

Prosecutors also allege that the benefits included furniture, renovation works, domestic staff for the properties, payment of private school fees, and luxury items purchased from high-end designers such as Louis Vuitton.

Two other defendants are also facing bribery-related charges connected to the case. Doye Agama appeared at Monday’s proceedings via video link, while Olatimbo Ayinde was present in the dock.

The trial is expected to formally open on January 26.

Tinubu Awards GCON To Industrialist Gilbert Chagoury For Economic Contributions

0

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Nigeria’s second-highest national honour, on renowned businessman and industrialist, Gilbert Chagoury.

In a letter dated January 8, 2026, the President said the honour was awarded in recognition of Chagoury’s long-standing contributions to Nigeria’s economic development. Tinubu stated that the award was made in exercise of the powers vested in him under Section 1(4) of the National Honours Act.

“In recognition of your outstanding virtues and in appreciation of your services to our country, Nigeria, I hereby award to you the title, dignity and all the privileges of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON),” the letter read.

Confirming the award, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga told THISDAY on Monday evening that the honour was conferred to appreciate Chagoury’s immense contributions to national development over several decades.

According to Onanuga, the award also marked Chagoury’s recent 80th birthday. He explained that there was no formal investiture ceremony in either Lagos or Abuja, adding that the national honour was conveyed directly to the recipient.

“It is true that the GCON award was conferred on Chief Chagoury in appreciation of his contributions to Nigeria’s economic growth spanning several decades,” Onanuga said. “There was no formal ceremony, but the award was delivered to him to mark his 80th birthday, which was celebrated recently.”

Onanuga further noted that Chagoury, who was born in Lagos in 1946, is a qualified Nigerian for the award.

Chagoury, a Lebanese-Nigerian, was born to Lebanese immigrant parents in Lagos. In 1971, he co-founded the Chagoury Group with his younger brother, Ronald Chagoury. The conglomerate has wide-ranging interests including construction, real estate, flour milling, glass manufacturing, water bottling, insurance, hospitality, telecommunications, information technology, furniture manufacturing, catering and international financing.

The award comes amid lingering public debate following the 2024 award of the $11 billion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project to Hi-Tech Construction, a company linked to the Chagoury Group, which drew scrutiny over procurement processes and the long-standing relationship between President Tinubu and the industrialist.

Police Debunk Mass Kidnap Of Over 100 Worshippers In Kaduna

0

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, has dismissed reports claiming that over 100 worshippers were abducted in Kajuru Local Government Area, describing them as falsehoods spread by conflict entrepreneurs seeking to destabilise the state.

Conflicting reports had circulated on Monday alleging that bandits kidnapped more than 100 people during a church service at Kurmin Wali village in Kajuru on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters after a State Security Council meeting at Sir Kashim Ibrahim House on Monday, the police commissioner challenged those behind the claims to provide the names and details of the alleged victims. He warned rumour mongers to desist from actions capable of undermining peace in the state, stressing that the law would be enforced against anyone spreading false information.

The Chairman of Kajuru Local Government Area, Dauda Madaki, said that immediately after hearing the reports, he mobilised the police and other security agencies to Kurmin Wali, where no evidence of any attack was found.

He said they visited the church where the alleged kidnap was said to have taken place, adding that the village head, Mai Dan Zaria, confirmed that no such incident occurred. Madaki also said the youth leader of the area, Bernard Bona, denied that any worshippers were abducted.

Madaki challenged anyone with contrary information to provide the names of the alleged victims, noting that no such list had been produced. He said the rumours appeared to be sponsored by individuals unhappy with the relative peace enjoyed in Kajuru in recent times.

He urged residents to remain calm, continue their lawful activities and report suspicious movements or the spread of false information to security agencies.

Also speaking, the Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Sule Shuaibu (SAN), said the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria and other religious leaders had visited the area and confirmed that the reports of the alleged kidnap were untrue. He assured that the Kaduna State Government has zero tolerance for criminality.

Airstrikes Kill Over 40 Terrorists In Borno — NAF

0

The Nigerian Air Force has confirmed that more than 40 terrorists were killed in coordinated airstrikes carried out in the Azir and Musarram areas of Borno State, disrupting planned attacks on civilian communities.

In a statement issued on Sunday, NAF spokesman Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the precision strikes were conducted on January 15 and 16 by air assets operating under the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, following credible intelligence on terrorist movements and imminent threats to surrounding areas.

He said initial surveillance revealed terrorist elements attempting to regroup under nearby tree cover, prompting successive and precise airstrikes that neutralised several of them.

According to Ejodame, post-strike assessments showed no remaining threats, while feedback from ground troops, local authorities and community sources indicated a significant reduction in terrorist presence and a return of relative calm.

He explained that on January 15, NAF aircraft also carried out a successful air interdiction at Musarram in the Tumbuns general area after intelligence reports indicated terrorists were assembling on canoes to launch attacks along the Baga and Fish Dam axis.

On arrival, the aircraft reportedly sighted about 10 canoes and over 40 suspected terrorists, who were engaged in multiple attack passes, forcing them into disarray. Some fleeing elements were pursued and neutralised, while others who regrouped at an assembly point were also struck, effectively dismantling the concentration.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, reaffirmed the Air Force’s commitment to providing timely and decisive air support to ground forces, noting that the operations demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led air power and close air-ground coordination in denying terrorists freedom of action.

He assured Nigerians that sustained pressure would continue on terrorist elements as efforts intensify to degrade their capabilities and stabilise affected areas.

Sowore Pleads Not Guilty To Amended Cyberbullying Charges Over Posts Against Tinubu

0

Activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has pleaded not guilty to amended cyberbullying charges brought against him over social media posts describing President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.

At the resumed hearing on Monday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, counsel to the Federal Government, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, informed the court that a two-count amended charge was filed on December 5, 2025. He said Sowore is now the sole defendant after X and Facebook were removed from the list of accused parties.

Kehinde told the court that the prosecution was ready to commence trial and had a witness in attendance. Defence counsel, Abubakar Marshal, objected, arguing that the amended charge was defective because it was not accompanied by witness statements and other supporting documents.

Marshal relied on Section 36(6) of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees the right of an accused person to be informed in detail of the nature of the offence and to have access to witness statements in order to prepare a proper defence.

Responding, Kehinde argued that further adjournment would not serve the interest of justice, noting that previous delays were caused by the defence. He maintained that in criminal proceedings, the prosecution is only required to provide a list of witnesses and exhibits.

In his ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar directed the prosecution to supply all relevant documents to the defence to ensure fair hearing and adjourned the matter to January 22 for the commencement of trial.

According to the amended charge, the prosecution alleges that Sowore knowingly disseminated false messages on his social media platforms by referring to President Tinubu as a “criminal.”

One of the posts cited reads: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The prosecution contends that the statement was intended to cause a breakdown of law and order and poses a threat to public safety.

The offences attract a minimum fine of ₦15 million or a prison term of up to five years upon conviction.

Senegal Defeated Morocco 1-0 After Extra Time on Sunday to Win the Africa Cup of Nations Final

0

Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 after extra time on Sunday to win the Africa Cup of Nations final, securing their second continental title in a match overshadowed by controversy and crowd trouble following a late penalty decision.

The decisive moment came in the fourth minute of extra time when Pape Gueye scored the winning goal, stunning the host nation at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. His strike settled a tense final that had been low on clear chances but high on drama.

Morocco had been handed a golden opportunity to win the trophy deep into stoppage time at the end of normal time after Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded a penalty following a VAR review of a challenge on Brahim Diaz by Senegal defender El Hadji Malick Diouf. The decision, taken after a delay of nearly 20 minutes, sparked angry reactions from Senegal players and supporters.

Diaz stepped up to take the spot-kick in the 24th minute of added time but saw his attempted chip comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. The miss followed prolonged protests and delays that appeared to unsettle the Real Madrid winger.

As Senegal players briefly walked off the pitch in protest at the decision, some of their supporters threw chairs and other objects from the away section and attempted to enter the field of play. Security personnel eventually restored order, and celebrations erupted among Senegal fans when the penalty was saved.

Senegal had earlier been angered by the disallowing of a stoppage-time goal when Abdoulaye Seck struck the post from a corner and Ismaila Sarr headed in the rebound, only for the effort to be ruled out for a foul.

After surviving the penalty scare, Senegal appeared energised and took the lead early in extra time. Sadio Mane won possession in midfield and passed to Idrissa Gana Gueye, who released Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder held off Moroccan captain Achraf Hakimi before firing a superb shot past Yassine Bounou into the top corner.

Morocco struggled to recover from the setback, and Diaz was substituted shortly after the goal. The hosts came close to forcing a penalty shoot-out when Nayef Aguerd headed against the crossbar in the second half of extra time, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Senegal nearly doubled their advantage late in the match, but Cherif Ndiaye missed a clear chance. The Lions of Teranga held firm to secure victory in front of a crowd of 66,526.

The defeat denied Morocco a first Africa Cup of Nations title in 50 years and a chance to lift the trophy on home soil. Many home supporters left the stadium before the final whistle on a cold, wet night in Rabat.

The triumph marks Senegal’s second AFCON title in three editions, following their penalty shoot-out victory over Egypt in the 2022 final in Yaounde, which had been their first continental crown. Notably, Pape Gueye’s strike was Senegal’s first goal ever scored in an AFCON final, after failing to score in their previous three appearances in the tournament’s deciding match.

Senegal will now turn their attention to the World Cup in the United States in June, while Sadio Mane has indicated that this final was his last appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Any post-match investigation is expected to examine the conduct of both the Senegal team and their supporters, as well as security arrangements by the Moroccan organisers, following the disorder that marred the closing stages of the final.

EU Calls Urgent Meeting On Trump’s Greenland Tariffs, Considers Retaliation, Describe US Plan As Blackmail

0

European Union (EU) leaders held emergency talks on Sunday after United States President Donald Trump announced plans to impose a 10 per cent tariff on imports from several EU countries unless they agree to Washington’s push to buy Greenland.

Trump said on Saturday that he would impose escalating tariffs on Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Finland, as well as Britain and Norway, until the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.

Cyprus, which currently holds the rotating six-month EU presidency, convened an urgent meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels at 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Sunday, as leaders intensified diplomatic contacts in response to the threat.

Several major EU states described Trump’s tariff threats against European allies as blackmail. France proposed responding with a range of previously unused economic countermeasures, including the possible activation of the EU’s Anti-Coercion Instrument.

A source close to French President Emmanuel Macron said he was pushing for the use of the instrument, known as the “bazooka”, which could limit access to public tenders, investments or banking activity, or restrict trade in services where the United States runs a surplus with the EU, including digital services.

However, sources said EU member states agreed not to immediately deploy the anti-coercion instrument, opting instead to prioritise a diplomatic solution. An update on the outcome of the meeting is expected later on Monday, January 18.

EU countries are said to have backed off from triggering retaliatory measures during the emergency meeting, preferring dialogue with Washington. Nonetheless, they could revive a €93 billion retaliation package if Trump proceeds with the proposed tariffs on February 1.

The retaliation package, prepared last year amid uncertainty over a possible EU-US trade deal, includes tariffs of up to 30 per cent on a range of US products, from cars to poultry. A decision on whether to reinstate the suspended measures will be taken after the February deadline.

All eight European countries targeted by the proposed tariffs, already subject to existing US duties of between 10 and 15 per cent, have sent small numbers of military personnel to Greenland amid a growing dispute with Washington over the future of the Danish Arctic territory, according to Reuters.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, the eight nations said tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk triggering a dangerous downward spiral. They stressed that the Danish military exercise in Greenland was intended to strengthen Arctic security and posed no threat to any country.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the unified response from across Europe, stating that “Europe will not be blackmailed,” a position echoed by Germany’s finance minister and Sweden’s prime minister.

Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel described Trump’s actions as blackmail, while European Council President António Costa announced plans to convene an extraordinary summit of EU leaders in the coming days, reportedly scheduled for Thursday, January 22.

German Social Democrat Bernd Lange, who chairs the European Parliament’s trade committee, and Valerie Hayer, head of the Renew Europe group, supported calls for a tougher stance. Germany’s engineering association also backed the push for stronger countermeasures.

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said the EU would retaliate if necessary but cautioned that activating the anti-coercion instrument at this stage was premature. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the tariff threat as a mistake, saying she had spoken directly with Trump and intended to engage other European leaders.

Britain’s Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said London favoured working with the United States to resolve the dispute, warning against escalating rhetoric.

The tariff threats have cast doubt on recently concluded trade deals between the United States and Britain, as well as the EU-US agreement reached in July. The European Parliament is now expected to suspend consideration of the EU-US trade deal, which had been scheduled for a vote later this month.

German lawmaker Juergen Hardt suggested that, as a last resort, Europe could consider a boycott of the football World Cup being hosted by the United States this year.

Banire Demands Retraction Over Alleged $45m Bribe Publication, Threatens Defamation Suit

0

The lead counsel to Nestoil Limited, Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN, has demanded the immediate retraction of a publication by online platform PointBlank News alleging that he and other lawyers collected millions of dollars in bribes to influence court judgments, warning that failure to do so would result in a defamation lawsuit.

Banire, through his counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, described the report titled “$2 Billion Bank Debt: Nestoil, Neconde Demand $40 Million Refund from Lawyers After Supreme Court Defeat” as false, malicious and gravely defamatory.

In a pre-action demand letter addressed to PointBlank News publisher Jackson Ude, Senior Editor (Africa) Ben Young and Nigeria Editor Uduma Mba, Banire denied claims that he received part of an alleged $40 million paid to lawyers to secure a favourable judgment at the Supreme Court in a debt dispute involving Nestoil Limited and Neconde Energy Limited.

The publication also alleged that Banire was involved in a separate scheme at the Federal High Court, claiming that $5 million was paid to influence an order vacating asset-freezing directives in relation to a $1 billion debt.

According to the letter, the allegations conveyed imputations of conspiracy, bribery, fraud and attempts to pervert the course of justice, all of which are offences punishable under Nigerian criminal law.

Olumide-Fusika said Banire, who is widely known for his anti-corruption advocacy and efforts to restore public confidence in the administration of justice and the legal profession, was deeply distressed by being linked to what he described as nefarious activities and serious crimes alleged in the publication.

He faulted the report for relying on an unnamed “reporter” and an unnamed “insider,” noting that no evidence was presented to substantiate the grave allegations.

Banire challenged the platform to publish verifiable proof of the alleged payments if such transactions truly occurred, insisting that even if bribery was not conducted in the presence of witnesses, the purported source must possess evidence of the alleged $40 million paid to lawyers and the alleged $5 million collected to influence a court order.

He warned that failure to produce such evidence would leave him with no option but to institute a defamation action against the publisher and editors of the platform, regardless of any difficulty in identifying or locating those responsible for the publication.

Banire also clarified the true position of events at the Supreme Court in Neconde Energy Limited v. FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited & four others (SC/CV/1130/2025), stating that his only appearance in the matter was on January 12, 2026, and that proceedings on that day were limited strictly to the issue of legal representation.

He stressed that the Supreme Court neither heard nor determined any substantive issues relating to the alleged debt.

A Certified True Copy of the ruling delivered on that date, attached to the letter, showed that the court merely adjourned the applications pending the determination of a related appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The ruling stated that the issue of representation, already before the Court of Appeal, had to be resolved before the Supreme Court could proceed to hear the parties.

Banire said the ruling clearly contradicted the publication’s suggestion that the Supreme Court had ruled on the substantive dispute or that any lawyer collected money to secure a favourable outcome.

He added that the publication’s reliance on unnamed sources suggested that the platform may have been misled, either deliberately or otherwise.

He therefore demanded an immediate retraction of the publication and reserved all his rights under the law.

As of the time of filing this report, PointBlank News had neither responded to the demand nor published a retraction.

Man City Agree Deal To Sign Guehi

0

Manchester City have agreed a deal in principle to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi as they seek to address a defensive crisis, according to reports on Friday.

The 25-year-old England international was close to joining Liverpool on transfer deadline day in September before the move collapsed. Other clubs, including Liverpool again and Bayern Munich, had been monitoring Guehi with a view to a possible move at the end of the season, when he was due to become a free agent.

Sky Sports reported that the deal is now in its final stages.

City manager Pep Guardiola declined to comment on the reported transfer when asked on the eve of his side’s Premier League clash against Manchester United, insisting he had “nothing to say” on the matter.

Guehi captained Crystal Palace to FA Cup success against City in May and has earned 26 caps for England.

Guardiola has acknowledged that City are facing serious defensive challenges, with several key players sidelined.

“Without John (Stones), without Ruben (Dias), without Josko (Gvardiol), we are in a difficult situation for not one game but a long, long period,” he said.

“It’s a difficult situation. Ruben will be back soon. Josko, no. John, hopefully we’ll see.”

Manchester City are currently second in the Premier League table, six points behind leaders Arsenal.
