The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) in Australia has issued a long-range severe weather prediction, alerting the country to impending flooding, heatwaves, thunderstorms, and tropical cyclones from October to April.
“In southern areas, heatwaves may last longer, be warmer overnight and more humid, all of which can increase the risk to human health,” the bureau said.
During the warmer months, severe thunderstorms are more frequent, especially in northern NSW, southern Queensland, inland Western Australia, and the tropical north.
The bureau highlighted that excessive grass growth in southern Australia from October to December raises pollen levels, which may lead to thunderstorm asthma.
Between November and April in Australia, there is a higher than 70% probability that 11 tropical cyclones will form. These storms may bring damaging winds, copious rain, and other dangers, including landslides and coastal erosion.
