ASUU Condemns Payment of Partial Salaries for October

Date:

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has expressed its disappointment at the Federal Government for the payment of partial salaries for the month of October.

Many academics on Thursday said they received partial salaries although it was unclear if it was a calculated action from the Federal Government.

This year, the professors were on strike for roughly eight months. On October 14, the strike was suspended in response to a Court of Appeal decision.

Among other things, the academics had been calling for improved welfare.

Dele Ashiru, the chairman of the ASUU branch at the University of Lagos, said in a statement on Thursday that the payments for October were “amputated and crippled.”

“It is, to say the least, insensitive and disheartening that a supposedly democratic government can be so vicious, reckless and inhuman in dealing with the best brains in our society,” the statement said.

“The leadership of the Union at the National level has been duly informed about this unfortunate development and they are on top of the issue.

“Members are please enjoined to remain calm and await further directives from the National Secretariat even in the face of this bracing provocation and crass wickedness by this administration.

“Please remain strong and undaunted because, a people united, can never be defeated.

“We shall overcome.”

Meanwhile, at Gombe State University, the ASUU branch has ordered its members not to submit results for the 2021/2022 session due to withheld salaries.

Academics shouldn’t continue to supervise undergraduate and graduate work assigned before the start of the strike, the branch further stated in a statement dated November 2, 2022.

ASUU plans to call an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council as part of efforts to handle the situation, the Punch Newspaper reported on Friday. According to reports, the NEC meeting could spur yet another fresh strike action although no date has been set for the meeting.
