The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Akwa Ibom State Wing, has distanced itself from the purported sit- at -home order by unknown group of people to the law-abiding teachers of Akwa Ibom State.
The union states categorically that as a professional body and Trade Union with the constitutional mandate to protect and promote the teaching profession in both primary and secondary schools, it would not adopt such an approach to drive home its demands.
According to a release jointly signed by the NUT State Chairman Comrade Edet Emenyi and the State Secretary, Comrade Victor Amirize, the Union denied issuing such an order which supposedly emanates from non-payment of entitlements to its members.
NUT therefore requests teachers to go about their lawful duties, as the issue of non-payment of October 2021 salaries were due to change of payment platform which was wrongly timed by the government, adding that the Union will however not accept such delay in payment of teachers’ salaries in subsequent time.
The teachers’ union therefore demanded payment of long overdue outstanding leave grants of 2013, 2015, 2016,2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021, Promotion arrears of 2011,2012,2013,2014 and 2015, and the refund of 7.5percent contributory pension fund to teachers, among other demands.
