Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated 44 newly appointed chairmen of sports associations in the state.
Speaking at the inauguration in Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu charged the new sports administrators to strengthen grassroots development, identify emerging talents and create pathways for athletes to achieve national and international success.
The governor described the appointments as part of efforts to reposition sports administration in Lagos, urging the chairmen to set measurable targets, develop succession plans and establish systems for nurturing young talents.
Sanwo-Olu also called for greater private sector investment in sports, noting its potential to create employment, entrepreneurship and other economic opportunities.
He tasked the chairmen to promote transparency, accountability and discipline, while providing opportunities for women, girls, persons with disabilities and other underrepresented talents.
Earlier, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, said government alone cannot develop the sector and called for stronger partnerships with sports associations, athletes, coaches, schools, corporate organisations and local communities.
Chairman of the Lagos State Athletics Association, Dr Solomon Alao, pledged the commitment of the newly inaugurated chairmen to supporting the state government’s sports development agenda.
