Lagos State has joined the Under2 Coalition, the world’s largest network of states and regions committed to achieving net-zero emissions and strengthening climate resilience.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu formalised the state’s membership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Climate Group during the 2026 London Climate Action Week in the United Kingdom.

The Under2 Coalition comprises more than 180 states and regions representing over half of the global economy, working together to accelerate climate action and promote climate-resilient development.

Speaking on the development, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the membership reinforces Lagos State’s commitment to building a resilient and low-carbon future while expanding collaboration with governments and institutions across the world.

He noted that as Africa’s economic hub, Lagos remains committed to demonstrating that economic growth and climate action can be pursued simultaneously.

The governor added that the partnership would provide opportunities to strengthen climate policies, attract sustainable investments and support environmental initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, Titilayo Oshodi, said the coalition membership would enhance partnerships, facilitate knowledge sharing and accelerate climate action efforts across the state.

According to her, the move positions Lagos to benefit from global best practices and innovative solutions in addressing climate challenges.

The state government expressed confidence that the membership will create new opportunities for international cooperation and strengthen ongoing efforts to build climate resilience and sustainable development across Lagos.
