The Philippines has expressed commitment to deepening diplomatic relations with Nigeria, particularly in the areas of labour and migration.
Secretary of Migrant Workers, Hans Cacdac, announced this during a visit to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja. Cacdac, who visited on the directive of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., said the move is aimed at boosting bilateral labour relations with countries hosting thousands of Filipino workers — including between 4,000 and 6,000 in Nigeria.
Ambassador Tuggar noted that Nigeria’s ties with the Philippines date back to the country’s independence era. He reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s 4-D foreign policy agenda — democracy, demography, development, and diaspora — with a focus on protecting Nigerian workers abroad.
Tuggar disclosed that both countries are working to finalise nine pending agreements, including one on labour, and discussed collaboration under Nigeria’s Technical Aid Corps, which has deployed professionals overseas since 1987.
