Kano State Commissioner for Transportation, Ibrahim Namadi, has resigned from office following revelations of his involvement in securing bail for an alleged drug baron, Sulaiman Danwawu.
Namadi’s resignation came shortly after Governor Abba Yusuf received the report of an investigative committee set up to probe the matter. The embattled commissioner said in a statement that his resignation was in the “overriding public interest” and meant to preserve the integrity of the administration.
“As a member of an administration that has consistently championed the fight against the sale and consumption of illicit drugs, it behoves me to take this step—painful as it may be,” Namadi stated.
“While I maintain my innocence, I cannot ignore the weight of public perception and the need to protect the values we have collectively built.”
He expressed gratitude to the governor for the opportunity to serve, reaffirming his loyalty to the administration’s ideals of transparency and accountability.
Governor Yusuf has accepted the resignation and reiterated his government’s zero-tolerance stance on drug-related offences.
“Our government will not compromise on discipline, transparency, and justice. The well-being and future of our youth must be protected at all costs,” the governor said.
The governor also warned political appointees to seek proper clearance before intervening in sensitive legal matters.
The investigative committee, chaired by Secretary to the State Government Umar Ibrahim, found that:
- Namadi voluntarily stood surety for Danwawu on July 18, 2025, despite knowing the drug-related nature of the case.
- He submitted an affidavit confirming his position as a serving commissioner.
- He pledged to comply with all bail conditions but failed to exercise appropriate caution.
- No financial inducement or personal relationship with the accused was found.
- The ₦5 million bail sum was only referenced in the defendant’s affidavit; Namadi did not pay it.
While no legal violations were established, the committee concluded that Namadi’s actions breached the ethical expectations of his office.
