EFCC Summons Ex-Militant Leader Tompolo Over Alleged Naira Abuse

Date:

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has initiated proceedings against former Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo (popularly known as Tompolo) over viral footage allegedly showing abuse of the naira during his birthday celebration.

  • The anti-graft agency confirmed via its official X account that Tompolo will be questioned, stating: “Nobody is above the law”
  • A circulating video from April shows the ex-militant being showered with ₦1,000 notes during his 54th birthday festivities in Delta State
  • Social media users accused the EFCC of selective enforcement, noting similar cases involving celebrities like Iyabo Ojo and Ayo Makun

Context:
This development follows the EFCC’s recent high-profile arrests for naira mishandling, including:

  • Businessman Emeka Okonkwo (“E-Money”) for currency spraying
  • Multiple Nollywood personalities for similar offenses
The crackdown aligns with the Central Bank’s policy against currency abuse under Section 21 of the CBN Act

Background:
Tompolo, a key figure in Niger Delta militancy before accepting a 2009 amnesty, maintains significant influence in the region. His case tests the EFCC’s consistency in enforcing financial regulations across all societal strata.

The commission has not disclosed when Tompolo will appear for questioning.
