PDP Governors, Wike Hold Crucial Meeting Amid Party Crisis

Date:

Top leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including serving governors and former governors, are currently meeting in Abuja to address the party’s deepening internal crises. The gathering at Bauchi Governor’s Lodge marks the PDP Governors Forum’s first major meeting since Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his cabinet defected to the ruling APC last month.

In attendance are Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau). Notably, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike – whose feud with Rivers Governor Sim Fubara has exacerbated party divisions – is also present alongside former governors including Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), and Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa).

The closed-door meeting comes as the PDP grapples with multiple defections, including three Kebbi senators who recently joined the APC after meeting with President Tinubu. Party insiders suggest the agenda includes damage control strategies, reconciliation efforts, and preparations for upcoming governorship elections. PDP Acting National Chairman Umar Damagun and other NWC members are participating in what observers describe as a make-or-break session for Nigeria’s main opposition party.

This development follows April’s high-profile loss of Delta State’s political structure to the APC and the unresolved Rivers State leadership crisis, which has become a litmus test for the PDP’s ability to maintain cohesion ahead of the 2027 elections.
