Mass Shooting at Florida State University Leaves 2 Dead, 5 Injured

Date:

A tragic shooting at Florida State University in Tallahassee on Thursday left two people dead and five others hospitalized with gunshot wounds. The suspected gunman, identified as 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner, was shot and neutralized by responding law enforcement officers.

Ikner, reportedly the son of an 18-year veteran deputy with the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, allegedly used one of his mother’s firearms in the attack. Sheriff Walt McNeil confirmed the shooter had been involved with the department’s Youth Advisory Council and had participated in various training programs, which may have contributed to his access to weapons.

The campus was placed on immediate lockdown as the shooting unfolded, with students and faculty ordered to shelter in place until authorities secured the scene. Florida State University Police Chief Jason Trumbower confirmed the casualties while praising the rapid response of campus and local law enforcement.

This incident marks the latest in a series of mass shootings plaguing American educational institutions, renewing debates about gun access and mental health support systems. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the shooter’s motives and full circumstances surrounding the attack.
