Coalition Alleges INEC Plot to Stifle Opposition Ahead of 2027 Polls

Date:

Abuja, Nigeria – A coalition of political leaders has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of deliberately obstructing the registration of new political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a strongly-worded statement, former Director-General of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), Malam Salihu Moh Lukman, claimed that multiple applications for party registration have been blocked while smaller existing parties face deregistration—a move he says undermines fair electoral competition.

The coalition further alleged that some opposition parties being considered as potential platforms are being pushed into internal crises, mirroring the challenges faced by major opposition groups. It warned that such actions could entrench a one-party system favoring the ruling party.

“We remain committed to resisting these undemocratic tactics and safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy,” the statement read, urging citizens to remain vigilant. The coalition promised to announce its formal political platform once ongoing negotiations are finalized.
