APC Backs Tinubu as Atiku, Obi, El-Rufai Intensify Coalition Talks

Date:

Former presidential candidates Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, alongside former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, have announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

The coalition was unveiled during a press conference at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Thursday. Atiku, speaking on behalf of the opposition leaders, confirmed the formation of the coalition, stating, “Yes, this is the birth of the coalition of opposition ahead of 2027.”

Peter Obi, represented by Yunusa Tanko, the Interim National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, emphasized that the coalition aims to liberate Nigerians from poor governance. He highlighted the need for issue-based discussions on power supply, security, and education, among other critical areas.

The coalition discussions have gained momentum following El-Rufai’s recent move from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Other opposition leaders present at the press conference included former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties, Peter Ameh; and Convener of The Alternative, Segun Showunmi.

While the coalition’s name and platform are yet to be finalized, Ameh disclosed that discussions are ongoing, and an announcement will be made once an agreement is reached.

APC Dismisses Coalition, Backs Tinubu

The APC has dismissed the coalition, with its Publicity Director, Bala Ibrahim, mocking Atiku as a “serial contestant and serial loser.” Ibrahim stated that the ruling party is not worried about the coalition, emphasizing that the APC continues to grow in membership and leadership.

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje also expressed confidence in Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, citing the President’s performance and commitment to good governance. Ganduje described the opposition coalition as an “assemblage of people with divergent political interests” and assured that no political arrangement would stop Tinubu’s re-election.

Presidency Reiterates Tinubu’s Focus on Governance

The Presidency has reiterated President Tinubu’s commitment to building a prosperous Nigeria, dismissing the opposition coalition as a distraction. Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that Tinubu remains focused on tackling intractable problems and delivering solid achievements.

Onanuga described the coalition as an “amalgam of Tinubu haters” driven by self-interest rather than public good. He assured Nigerians that the President’s agenda for national development remains on track.

As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape is set for intense competition, with the opposition coalition aiming to unseat the APC and the ruling party confident in its ability to retain power.
