The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following a similar vote by the House of Representatives. The approval, granted under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), empowers the President to enforce emergency measures while mandating a review of the situation within six months.
In addition to approving the emergency rule, the Senate resolved to establish a mediation committee comprising eminent Nigerians to help resolve the political crisis in Rivers State. The committee will work towards fostering dialogue and reconciliation among the conflicting parties.
The National Assembly has also imposed a joint committee of both chambers to oversee the administration of affairs in Rivers State during the emergency period. This move aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of emergency measures.
