JUST IN: Rivers Assembly Suspends Plenary Indefinitely Amid Budget Presentation Dispute

Date:

The Rivers State House of Assembly has announced an indefinite suspension of its legislative sessions, escalating the political tension surrounding Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s planned presentation of the 2025 budget.

The decision was made during Friday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in Port Harcourt. This development comes just days after Governor Fubara formally notified the Assembly of his intention to present the budget on March 19, in compliance with a recent Supreme Court judgment.

The governor had previously expressed frustration after being denied access to the Assembly premises during an earlier attempt to present the budget. He called on lawmakers to prioritize governance and the interests of Rivers people over political disputes.

The indefinite suspension of plenary sessions raises concerns about the timely passage of the 2025 budget and its potential impact on the state’s development agenda. The ongoing standoff highlights the deepening rift between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State.

As the political crisis unfolds, stakeholders are urging both sides to resolve their differences amicably and focus on delivering good governance to the people of Rivers State.
