Mexico Has Backup Plans Amid Trump’s Tariff Threat, Says President Sheinbaum

Date:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that Mexico will wait to see if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose tariffs on the country, adding that Mexico has contingency plans in place should the tariffs take effect.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is prepared for any outcome. “We have a plan B, C, D,” she said, without providing specific details.

The announcement comes after Mexican officials met with their U.S. counterparts in Washington last week to discuss trade and security policies. The meetings were part of Mexico’s efforts to prevent the imposition of tariffs, which Trump has threatened as a response to the flow of synthetic drugs like fentanyl and migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Sheinbaum described the discussions in Washington as “cordial” and noted that coordination with the U.S. has been very good so far. However, she reiterated that Mexico is ready to implement its backup plans if necessary.

Trump has accused Mexico and Canada of not doing enough to address the issues of drug trafficking and migration, warning of sweeping tariffs if the nations fail to take stronger action.

As tensions rise, Mexico’s proactive approach highlights its determination to protect its economic interests and maintain stability in the face of potential trade disruptions.
