NDDC Donates Mobility Aids, Assistive Devices to Persons with Disabilities in Akwa Ibom

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated essential mobility aids and assistive devices to persons living with disabilities in Akwa Ibom State. The donation was part of activities to commemorate the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held in Uyo.

Speaking at the event, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, urged persons with disabilities to embrace their uniqueness and not feel inferior due to their conditions. Represented by the Commissioner representing NDDC in Akwa Ibom, Pastor Abasiandikan Nkono, Dr. Ogbuku emphasized the importance of the event’s theme: “Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future.”

Mrs. Anthonia Akpan, Director of the NDDC Akwa Ibom State Office, reiterated the Commission’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of persons with disabilities in its programs. She assured that the NDDC would continue to support initiatives aimed at improving their quality of life.

Mrs. Nene Bassey, Special Assistant to the Akwa Ibom State Governor on Persons with Disabilities, expressed gratitude for the donation, promising that the equipment would be used responsibly to benefit the intended recipients.

The event also featured a mental health awareness session, highlighting the need to recognize mental health as a form of disability. Specialist Psychiatrist, Dr. Eniekop Godwin, stressed that raising awareness about mental health would encourage individuals to seek help early, thereby reducing the prevalence of mental health disorders in society.

Beneficiaries, including Janet Eyo Umoh, expressed their appreciation for the donations, noting that the aids would significantly improve their mobility and overall quality of life.
