The World Health Organisation’s Regional Director-elect for Africa, Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, has passed away at the age of 55 while receiving medical treatment in India.
Tanzania’s parliament announced his death on Wednesday, with Speaker Tulia Ackson confirming that arrangements are being made to repatriate his body.
The cause of death was not disclosed.
Dr. Ndugulile, who was appointed as the incoming Regional Director for WHO’s African Region in August 2024, was due to assume office in February 2025, succeeding Dr. Matshidiso Moeti after her two terms in the position.
WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed his shock and sorrow over Ndugulile’s sudden demise.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), Ghebreyesus wrote, “Shocked and deeply saddened to learn about the sudden passing of Dr. Faustine Ndugulile, @WHOAFRO Regional Director-elect. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and the parliament and people of #Tanzania.”
Ndugulile’s appointment was widely celebrated for his experience and commitment to public health, and his passing marks a significant loss for the global health community.
