China Announces Cash Handouts for Extreme Poverty Relief

Date:

The Chinese government has introduced a one-time cash handouts for citizens living in extreme poverty, following the launch of broad measures to stimulate the country’s sluggish economy.

Announced by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on Wednesday, September 25, the subsidies will target disadvantaged groups, including orphans and the impoverished.

Local governments have been instructed to ensure the funds reach recipients by October 1, ahead of China’s National Day, as a sign of “the party and government’s love and care for people in need.”

However, the statement did not disclose the amount to be distributed or the total cost of the initiative.

This cash aid follows China’s unveiling of a 1 trillion yuan (US$142 billion) stimulus package aimed at revitalizing its financial markets and supporting sectors like real estate. The central bank also announced measures to lower mortgage interest rates.

While the announcement has been largely welcomed on social media, some users raised concerns about potential corruption and whether the funds would truly reach those in need.
