PDP Refuses to Sign Peace Accord for Edo Governorship Election

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declined to sign the peace accord for the upcoming Edo State Governorship election, scheduled for September 21.

This was announced by former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, at the venue of the peace accord signing in Benin on Thursday.

According to Abubakar, the PDP stated that it would only sign the peace accord if certain conditions were met. “I met the governor yesterday, and he told me the PDP are not going to sign this peace accord,” he said.

The specific conditionalities put forward by the PDP were not disclosed, but the party indicated they would sign the accord in Abuja after their demands were addressed.

The Chairman of the PDP in Edo State was absent from the event, and no further details were provided about why the party refused to sign the accord.

However, Governor Godwin Obaseki had earlier hinted at the possibility of the PDP not signing when he met with members of the National Peace Committee on Wednesday.

Despite the PDP’s absence, other parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) with its candidate Monday Okpebholo, and the Labour Party’s candidate Olumide Akpata, signed the peace accord, committing to a peaceful election process.
