Olympic marathon runner Rebecca Cheptegei has tragically passed away after being set on fire by her ex-boyfriend in a shocking attack. The Uganda Athletics Federation confirmed the news, calling for justice in the case.
Cheptegei, 33, sustained severe burns from the assault, which took place after she returned home from church in north-west Kenya. Authorities believe the attack stemmed from an ongoing land dispute between Cheptegei and her former partner.
Having recently competed in Paris, Cheptegei finished 44th in the marathon at the Olympics and claimed gold at the 2022 World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand.
