Local Government of Nigeria Seeks Downward Review of New National Minimum Wage

Date:

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has declared that local government administrations across the country cannot afford the proposed new national minimum wage by the Organised Labour.

ALGON National President, Comrade Aminu Muazu-Maifata emphasized the financial constraints faced by Local Governments, stating that with the current allocation from the federal accounts, no Local Government can pay the ₦62,000 minimum wage proposed by the federal government, let alone the ₦250,000 demanded by the Organised Labour.

He highlighted that many Local Governments are still struggling to implement the ₦30,000 Minimum Wage approved in 2019, with some councils continuing to pay their workers ₦18,000.

Comrade Muazu-Maifata argued that a sustainable and affordable minimum wage should be established.
