President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed the government’s determination to overhaul the justice system in Nigeria with a particular focus on the implementation of the Revised National Policy on Justice, 2024-2028.
The President, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, officially inaugurated the 2-Day National Summit on Justice 2024 in Abuja.
The Summit, organized by the Federal Ministry of Justice in partnership with the Nigerian Bar Association and the National Judicial Council, is themed “Repositioning the Justice System: Constitutional, Statutory, and Operational Reforms for Access and Efficiency.”
Highlighting his administration’s commitment to impartiality and constitutional adherence, Tinubu emphasized that the Summit provided justice sector institutions with an opportunity to identify necessary system changes and critical reforms for Nigerians to benefit from substantial investments in the sector.
Delivering the President’s address, VP Shettima stressed the federal government’s determination to implement policies and fulfill promises, utilizing law and justice to create opportunities for the populace.
Reflecting on measures to reposition the Judiciary, President Tinubu prioritized funding, doubling it in the Renewed Hope budget 2024, as outlined in the preliminary steps toward supporting a just and rules-based Nigeria.
Earlier, The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio lauded stakeholders’ commitment to consensus-building for a robust judicial system, promising legislative support to enshrine summit outcomes into law, suggesting a bottom-up approach for proposed reforms.
Asserting that justice system reform is a moral imperative, Senator Akpabio recommended key recommendations be highlighted for amendment and sent to the National Assembly for expedited and fair dispensation of justice, advocating for a bottom-to-top approach in the proposed reforms.
Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ariwoola, underscored the necessity of holistic reform in the judiciary, citing constitutional, statutory, and operational reforms as essential to meeting public aspirations.
