Nigeria Police Service Commission Workers Issue Notice of Indefinite Strike

Date:

The Joint Union Congress of  Nigeria Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday issued a notice of its intention to embark on an indefinite strike to the management of the commission over a breach of agreement.

The union said that the industrial action would begin on Monday, August 29, 2022. Mr. Adoyi Adoyi, The Chairman of the Joint Service Union, PSC chapter, made the announcement in Abuja.

This notice comes just after the disagreement between staff of the commission, the Chairman, and the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, about who should be responsible for the recruitment, promotion, and appointment of constables and officers.

The chairman noted that the IGP and other police chiefs in conspiracy with the chairman of the PSC infringed on the constitutional duty of the PSC.

He said the act carried out by the IG and his conspirators is an obvious disregard of the Nigeria constitution, the judgement of the Appeal Court and the authorities of the PSC.

“We are embarking on an indefinite strike from Monday, August 29, to show our discontent with the way the PSC is being run by the chairman of the commission, and the flagrant disregard for the constitution, the court of law, and the PSC by the police chief.
“The duties of the PSC are spelled out in the constitution but the IGP has disregarded all of that, and has taken over the duties of the commission. He appoints and promotes at will as opposed to what is stated in the constitution.

“According to the constitution, the appointment, promotion, and recruitment of police officers and constables are the prerogative of the PSC, not the IGP,” the chairman said.
