BREAKING: ASUU extends warning strike by eight weeks

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has extended its one-month warning strike for another 8 weeks, condemning the Nigerian government of inattentiveness and vending lies.

ASUU made the decision at a prolonged meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) held at the Union’s National Secretariat, University of Abuja which started on Sunday and ended early Monday morning.

ASUU had on February 14, embarked on a one-month warning strike over the Federal Government’s inability to meet the demands the two parties entered into in previous times.

According to a member of the union, who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, said the two months is to give the Federal Government space to meet their demands.

Another member of the NEC who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said a said a statement is currently being drafted by the leadership of ASUU and that as soon as it is ready, it will be distributed.

The source said: “Yes, we have extended the strike by eight weeks pending when the Nigerian government would find the university system worthy of the desired attention. A statement is currently being drafted to that effect. We will make it available soon.”

An official of the Union, Prof Abdulkadir Muhammad Danbazau, also disclosed that the decision to extend the deadline was to enable ASUU and the Government reach a consensus, so that they do not have to go on strike again in the future.
