Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has assured residents of Maiduguri that the rising water level at Alau Dam poses no immediate threat, despite widespread concerns following recent heavy rainfall.
Speaking during an inspection of ongoing reconstruction works at the dam, located near the state capital, Governor Zulum acknowledged public anxiety but emphasized that engineering assessments indicate the situation remains stable.
He disclosed that newly created water channels have helped reduce pressure on the dam, leading to a four-inch drop in water levels in recent days. He expressed optimism that levels would continue to decline.
While assuring the public, Zulum warned residents in flood-prone areas against obstructing drainage systems or constructing buildings along waterways, stressing the importance of community cooperation.
The governor also announced plans to review Maiduguri’s city master plan to address structural challenges that worsen flooding. He said enforcing environmental regulations, though challenging, is vital to averting future disasters.
