WHO Warns of Oral Health Crisis in Africa, 42% Suffer from Dental Diseases

Date:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised alarms over Africa’s oral health crisis, revealing that 42% of Africans suffer from dental diseases such as dental caries, gum disease, and tooth loss. The announcement was made on World Oral Health Day 2025, with WHO emphasizing the urgent need to address the continent’s neglected oral health challenges.

Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, Acting WHO Regional Director for Africa, highlighted the severity of the crisis, noting that the African region also reports the highest number of noma cases—a severe, rapidly progressing gangrenous disease that primarily affects young children.

“World Oral Health Day serves as a crucial opportunity to boost awareness and prioritize oral health—a key element of overall well-being that remains largely neglected on the continent,” Dr. Ihekweazu stated.

To accelerate improvements, WHO has launched the Global Oral Health Action Plan 2023-2030, which includes a robust monitoring framework. Additionally, the organization has endorsed the Regional Oral Health Strategy 2016-2025, aimed at integrating oral health into broader non-communicable disease prevention and control efforts. However, progress has been slow, prompting calls for urgent action.

Dr. Ihekweazu called for multi-sectoral engagement, increased funding, and the integration of oral health services into national benefits packages. He also emphasized the importance of a people-centered approach to drive meaningful change in Africa’s oral health landscape.

The WHO’s warning underscores the need for governments, healthcare providers, and stakeholders to prioritize oral health as a critical component of public health. Addressing the crisis requires coordinated efforts to improve access to dental care, raise awareness, and implement effective prevention strategies.
