UN, Stakeholders Call for Domestic Financing Ahead of Africa Social Impact Summit

Date:

As preparations intensify for the fourth edition of the Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS), development and financial sector stakeholders are calling for a shift towards innovative, homegrown financing solutions to tackle Africa’s pressing socio-economic challenges.

Co-convened by the United Nations in Nigeria, this year’s summit aims to spotlight the importance of local resource mobilization in addressing issues such as poverty, climate change, and inequality.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the summit, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, warned that the effects of climate change are threatening livelihoods and undoing years of development progress. He emphasized the need for immediate, strategic action to curb further decline.

Also addressing the media, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Sterling Bank Plc, Abubakar Suleiman, noted that scale is crucial in solving Nigeria’s development issues. He pointed out that with the private sector controlling more than 80% of the country’s resources, its involvement is essential for achieving sustainable impact.

The upcoming ASIS is expected to drive conversations on leveraging private capital and fostering collaborative, local solutions to Africa’s development needs, reinforcing the shift toward domestic financing and inclusive economic growth.
