US President Donald Trump on Tuesday mocked the United Nations during an address to the General Assembly in New York, accusing the world body of failing to fulfill its core mission of maintaining global peace.
“The UN has such tremendous potential. I’ve always said it — it has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it’s not even coming close to living up to it,” Trump said.
The president, known for his combative rhetoric at multilateral forums, also ridiculed the state of the UN headquarters, complaining about a broken escalator at the New York building during his speech.
Trump’s remarks come as he prepares to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the General Assembly and outline what aides have described as a “dark vision” of the UN’s future role.
