Tragedy struck during celebrations for MC Alger’s league triumph on Sunday as three spectators lost their lives and more than 70 others sustained injuries after falling from an upper stand of the stadium.
The incident occurred as fans gathered to mark MC Alger’s second consecutive title in the Algerian top-flight league.
According to a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Health, 38 injured individuals were admitted to Beni Messous University Hospital, where the three fatalities were also recorded. The ministry added that 27 injured fans were taken to Ben Aknoun Hospital, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16 others for treatment.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering his condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a swift recovery.
Authorities are expected to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic fall, as safety at public sporting events comes under renewed scrutiny.
