Nigeria’s Super Falcons were welcomed home to thunderous cheers on Monday as they arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, following their record-setting 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title victory in Morocco.
The team’s chartered flight touched down around 2:45 pm, with team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, proudly bearing the trophy, leading her jubilant teammates and officials off the aircraft.
The Falcons were received by a high-powered Federal Government delegation led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. He was joined by the Ministers of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Information and National Orientation, as well as the Governors of Kwara and Imo States.
The celebratory atmosphere was further enhanced by a cultural troupe that performed to the delight of fans and dignitaries alike. Also present to receive the champions was the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, alongside top officials from the Nigerian Football Federation.
The reception followed the Falcons’ dramatic 3–2 comeback win over tournament hosts Morocco in the final match in Rabat — a victory that solidified Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.
Later today, the team will be honoured at a presidential reception at the State House, where President Bola Tinubu is expected to commend the players and officials for their outstanding performance and historic achievement.
