The Senate has constituted a six-member ad-hoc committee to investigate recent allegations made against Senator Ashiru Oyelola, who represents Kwara South.
This committee has been tasked with summoning the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to provide clarification regarding the allegations.
The NDLEA recently claimed that a raid on Senator Ashiru’s residence in Ilorin, Kwara State, led to the discovery of illicit drugs.
This accusation followed the senator’s critical remarks during a Senate debate on October 15, where he described the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised agency” while contributing to a bill to establish the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.
Senator Ashiru raised the issue in plenary under order 42, referring to the NDLEA’s allegations as witch-hunting and an attempt to tarnish his image.
He asserted that the agency’s actions infringed on his rights as a senator, aiming to intimidate the Senate from openly debating matters of national importance.
The Senate President, expressing skepticism about the timing of the NDLEA’s claims, refrained from making any hasty judgments. Following a voice vote, the Senate resolved to act on the committee’s recommendations within one week.
