The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced strategic appointments to its National Working Committee (NWC), positioning the party for stronger electoral performance in the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party confirmed the appointment of three experienced politicians to critical leadership roles following a NWC meeting chaired by National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam.

- Former Anambra South Senator (2003-2007)
- Ex-Commissioner under late Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife’s SDP administration
- Political science scholar and former University of Abuja lecturer
- Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar – Deputy National Chairman (North)
- SDP’s pioneer National Secretary (2010-2015)
- 2011 Gombe State governorship candidate
- Expert in political economy and development
- Mr. Hussani Ado Bello – National Financial Secretary
- Chartered accountant and public finance expert
- Former SDP Kano State Chairman
- Experienced in inter-party affairs as ex-IPAC official
Strategic Move for Electoral Preparedness
Aiyenigba emphasized that the appointments, effective from May 15, 2025, were made in strict compliance with the party’s constitution and aimed at consolidating SDP’s structures nationwide.
“These appointments reflect our commitment to building a robust leadership team capable of steering the party to greater heights ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement read.
The SDP, which has been gaining momentum as a viable third force in Nigerian politics, appears to be strategically positioning experienced hands to coordinate its operations across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
