REPS URGE REVIEW OF LAGDON DAM AGREEMENT BETWEEN NIGERIA AND CAMEROON

Date:

The House of Representatives on Tuesday directed the Nigeria-Cameroon Friendship Group to review the existing arrangement and agreement between Nigeria and Cameroon regarding the Lagdo Dam, to prevent recurring flood disasters in the country.

The House also called on the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite the completion of the Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State. This dam is expected to serve as a buffer, absorbing excess water released from the Lagdo Dam, and aid in rehabilitating critical infrastructure in flood-prone areas.

Additionally, the House urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to conduct a comprehensive study on the impact of climate change and the annual water release from the Lagdo Dam on Nigeria’s riverine communities. The ministry is to develop an actionable flood management plan aimed at protecting lives and properties.

Hon. Kingsley Chinda, House Minority Leader, played a significant role in driving these resolutions forward.
