President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family of Ben Oluwole-Johnson, who passed away on September 17, 2024, in Crete, Illinois, at the age of 72. A U.S.-based business executive and estate magnate, Oluwole-Johnson was also a former governorship aspirant in Ondo State and CEO of Benol Management & Development Company. His burial is set for October 5, with rites beginning Friday.
In a heartfelt tribute, President Tinubu praised Oluwole-Johnson for his exceptional intelligence, forward-thinking nature, and unwavering passion for Nigeria. “His rugged determination and tenacity reflected the passion we all shared for Nigeria,” said the President.
Recalling their interactions in Chicago, Tinubu spoke fondly of Oluwole-Johnson’s business acumen and philanthropic spirit. Notably, he highlighted Oluwole-Johnson’s significant role in securing and donating over $42 million worth of hospital equipment to Nigeria, with a focus on Lagos State. “Despite the extensive, difficult, and time-consuming nature of the work, Ben never claimed a penny for his efforts,” Tinubu remarked.
The President also remembered Oluwole-Johnson’s courageous run for governor in Ondo State, noting the strong support he received from the Nigerian community in Chicago, including himself. “Although he fell short, his audacity and courage earned his esteemed wife, Moji, the affectionate title of ‘First Lady’ in my book and in the hearts of many in Nigeria.”
Even as his health declined, Oluwole-Johnson remained dedicated to Nigeria, contributing his business expertise through “The Caring Group,” a collective aimed at supporting the country, particularly Lagos State. “Thanks to his lovely wife, Moji, who always stepped in to carry out his wishes, his influence and contributions remained ever-present,” Tinubu added.
President Tinubu concluded by honoring Oluwole-Johnson’s enduring legacy and expressed sympathy for the family he left behind. “We will sorely miss Mr. Ben, but we take solace in the great family he leaves behind. May he rest in perfect peace,” he said.
