President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why he withheld his assent to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021.
In a letter to the Senate President, Senator Ahmed Lawan, President Buhari said prevailing situation in the country amongst other things would not allow him to sign the bill.
Among other reasons for rejecting the Bill, the President cited high cost of conducting direct primaries, the security challenge of monitoring the election, violation of citizens’ rights and marginalization of small political parties.
It is believed that the Electoral Law if assented will open a new vista for a credible Electoral process in Nigeria’s democracy.
The house did not debate on the President’s refusal to sign the Bill.
