Obi of Onitsha Denies Involvement in Planned Protest Over Nnamdi Kanu

Date:

The Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Alfred Achebe, has dismissed reports linking him to a planned protest in support of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The revered monarch described the claims as false and unfounded, urging the public to disregard the social media reports.

In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Chief Osita Anionwu, the Obi clarified that he did not issue any directive for Igbo youths to stage a protest in Abuja on March 21, 2025, as falsely claimed. He emphasized that he is currently in New York City, USA, participating in the United Nations Conference on the Status of Women (CSW69) and will not return to Nigeria until March 26.

The statement read: “The Palace of the Obi of Onitsha (Ime Obi Onicha) has been made aware of a false social media report claiming that the Obi of Onitsha has directed Igbo youths to prepare for a massive demonstration in Abuja on March 21, 2025, in support of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s court appearance. The report also falsely states that His Majesty will personally lead the demonstration.

“We wish to categorically deny this report. The Obi of Onitsha did not issue any such directive or statement. His Majesty is currently in New York City, USA, participating in the United Nations Conference on the Status of Women (CSW69) and will not return to Nigeria until March 26.”

The Obi of Onitsha, who leads the Joint Body of the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers and Representatives of Igbo Archbishops and Bishops on Peace and Reconciliation, reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu through peaceful and lawful means.

He urged the public to rely on official channels for accurate information and warned against the misuse of his name for unauthorized purposes.
