NSCDC Chief Orders Arrest of Officers in N5.2m Roadside Extortion Scandal, Vows Maximum Punishment

Date:

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has launched a major crackdown after a viral video exposed its officers allegedly extorting N5.2 million from a traveler along the Ado-Ekiti to Akure highway. Commandant General Ahmed Audi personally ordered the immediate arrest and transfer to Abuja of the implicated personnel following directives from Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for a full investigation. The victim was reportedly forced to transfer the huge sum after being stopped at a checkpoint, with the shocking incident captured on camera and sparking nationwide outrage.

NSCDC spokesman Afolabi Babawale confirmed the accused officers are now detained at national headquarters facing a disciplinary committee that must conclude its investigation within 72 hours. Minister Tunji-Ojo has demanded weekly progress reports on the case, which has become a litmus test for the government’s anti-corruption stance in security agencies. Commandant General Audi condemned the incident as “a disgraceful violation of our code of ethics” and warned that proven offenders would face maximum punishment including dismissal and possible prosecution.

The scandal has intensified calls for broader reforms against endemic extortion by security personnel on Nigerian roads, with civil society groups threatening mass protests if swift justice isn’t served. In response, the NSCDC has activated emergency measures including a 24-hour hotline (0800-NSDCDC) for real-time reporting of harassment and deployment of rapid response teams to intervene in ongoing incidents. The Corps leadership has assured the public that no officer found culpable will be protected, with the disciplinary committee mandated to submit its findings and recommendations within the three-day deadline as the government seeks to restore confidence in security operations nationwide.
