The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has announced plans to begin a nationwide social mobilisation campaign focused on birth registration.
The initiative aims to ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and social protection.
Speaking on behalf of NOA’s Director General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director of Special Duties and States Operations, David Akoji, highlighted that the campaign would target children aged 0–5 years, providing them with a National Identification Number (NIN) at no cost.
“NoA, in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) and UNICEF, is set to launch a nationwide birth registration social mobilisation drive to ensure that every child in Nigeria gains access to vital services like education, healthcare, and social protection. The focus is on registering all children aged 0–5 years and providing them with a free NIN,” he stated.
Akoji underscored the significance of birth registration as a fundamental right and a crucial step in acknowledging a child’s existence. “Birth registration safeguards a child’s rights and privileges, unlocking access to services necessary for development and protecting against exploitation and statelessness,” he said.
The drive, which commenced in August and will continue until November 2024, is designed to support national planning and development by generating accurate data essential for public services. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit NPC registration centers, bringing supporting documents such as an immunisation card or an existing birth certificate.
“Every child registered during this period will receive a NIN after face capturing and birth registration. We urge all parents, guardians, and community leaders to engage in this initiative to give every Nigerian child the best start in life,” Akoji added.
The NOA emphasised that the process is simple, free, and vital for ensuring the future well-being and recognition of children across Nigeria.
