The cost of domestic air travel in Nigeria increased significantly in July 2024, with fares rising by 25% compared to the same period last year.
The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that the average airfare for a single journey on specified routes reached N98,561.74 in July 2024, up from N78,775.74 in July 2023.
This rise in airfares follows the federal government‘s recent announcement of plans to raise tax charges, despite ongoing concerns from the Airline Operators of Nigeria about multiple taxation.
The report also noted a month-on-month increase of 9.65% in airfare compared to June 2024. While air travel costs surged, other modes of transportation saw varying trends.
The average fare for city bus journeys decreased by 2.18% from June to July 2024 and dropped by 29.46% compared to July 2023.
Intercity bus fares showed a slight increase of 0.35% month-on-month, while motorcycle (Okada) transport fares rose by 1.22% from June to July 2024 but fell by 25.20% year-on-year. Waterway transport fares saw a slight decline both month-on-month and year-on-year.
Regionally, Anambra recorded the highest intercity bus fares, while Kwara had the lowest. Taraba state had the highest intra-city bus fares, with Adamawa and Abia recording the lowest.
