The Federal Government is set to launch a comprehensive intellectual property policy to protect Nigerian innovations, with the revalidation of the National Intellectual Property Policy and Strategy Paper. This was announced by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Doris Anite, during a workshop in Abuja.
The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministries of Industry, Trade and Investment, Culture and Creative Economy, Justice, and Health and Social Welfare, aims to safeguard intellectual assets and promote economic growth. Dr. Anite emphasized the importance of the policy in ensuring ownership rights to original inventions, creative works, and innovations, helping mitigate financial risks and maximize commercialization benefits.
Minister Anite reassured Nigerians that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is committed to upholding intellectual property rights. Hon. Hanatu Musawana, Minister of Culture and Creative Economy praised the policy’s timely revalidation. At the same time, Ambassador Nura Rimi, Permanent Secretary of Industry, Trade and Investment, commended the stakeholders’ efforts in addressing piracy and intellectual property theft.
The final policy document is expected to be approved by the Federal Executive Council and launched in the third week of October.
