NGA President Akachukwu Nwokedi Named IGU Regional Coordinator for Africa

Date:

President of the Nigerian Gas Association (NGA), Akachukwu Nwokedi, has been appointed Regional Coordinator for Africa by the International Gas Union (IGU), marking a significant recognition of Nigeria’s leadership in the continent’s energy sector.

The announcement was made at the World Gas Conference (WGC) held recently in Beijing, China. Nwokedi succeeds Engr. Khaled Abubakr of Egypt, who previously held the role for Africa and the Middle East before being elected Vice-President of the IGU for the 2028–2031 term.

In his new role, Nwokedi will serve as the key liaison between the IGU and African member countries, representing the region’s interests in global policy discussions and overseeing initiatives aimed at enhancing natural gas development across the continent.

The IGU highlighted Nwokedi’s contributions to the promotion of gas as a driver of energy security in Africa, stating that his appointment affirms Nigeria’s strategic influence in the industry.

As Regional Coordinator, Nwokedi will advocate for supportive policies, facilitate knowledge exchange, coordinate regional collaborations, and provide insights to shape IGU’s global strategy. The position is seen as critical to promoting energy access, sustainability, and infrastructure development in Africa’s rapidly evolving gas landscape.

Reacting to his appointment, Nwokedi described it as both an honour and a significant responsibility. “It acknowledges Nigeria’s leadership in Africa’s gas sector while providing an important platform to advocate for sustainable energy solutions that will drive economic development across our continent,” he said.

“I look forward to strengthening collaboration between African nations and the global gas community,” he added, reaffirming NGA’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s gas industry for national and regional growth.

The IGU, a global organization promoting the use of natural gas, continues to emphasize the role of gas in achieving sustainable and inclusive energy systems worldwide.
