Brazil forward Neymar has announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 34-year-old made the announcement after Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16.
Neymar came on as a late substitute and scored a stoppage-time penalty, but his goal proved only a consolation as Erling Haaland scored twice to send Norway into the quarter-finals.
Speaking after the match, Neymar said his journey with the national team had come to an end.
“I tried and I tried. Now it’s over. It began here and it ends here,” he said.
The Brazilian star was visibly emotional at the final whistle and was consoled by teammates after Brazil’s exit.
Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer had endured a series of injuries in recent years and was a surprise inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad.
Injury ruled him out of Brazil’s opening two group matches, but he returned as a substitute in the 3-0 victory over Scotland before making his final international appearance against Norway.
Neymar ends his international career as one of Brazil’s most celebrated footballers, bringing to a close a journey that spanned more than a decade with the five-time world champions.
