Two people were confirmed dead on Sunday following a clash between an Army Officer and a Police Special Constabulary at Agyaragu Market in Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Ramhan Nansel, the incident began during an investigation into a reported motorcycle theft around 12:30 p.m. A suspect had been arrested by a police operative, aided by a Police Special Constabulary attached to Jenkwe Division.
As the officers were escorting the suspect to the station, a soldier on leave from Borno State intervened, attempting to halt the arrest.
The statement alleged that the soldier attacked the police team with a knife, injuring the special constabulary. In self-defense, the police managed to overpower the soldier, resulting in both sustaining injuries. The soldier later succumbed to his injuries.
In retaliation, local youths reportedly stormed the police station and set it ablaze. Police officers responded to the unrest, leading to three attackers being shot, with one later confirmed dead.
Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Nadada, swiftly visited the scene with military units from Operation Whirl Stroke, 177 Guards Battalion, and 22 Quick Response Unit.
He ordered the deployment of tactical units to restore order. The situation is now under control, and an investigation is ongoing as authorities pursue those responsible.
