Rafael Nadal on Sunday dominated Casper Ruud in consecutive sets to win his 14th French Open championship, taking his total Grand Slam titles to 22.
Nadal said the preparation leading up to the game was not easy and revealed after his 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 victory that he had been struggling with a foot injury and had to receive an injection to help numb his foot before the final.
The 14-time French Open winner revealed in an interview after the match that he had been undergoing injections into a nerve recently at Roland Garros, intended to numb the pain in his foot caused by Mull-Weiss syndrome. The procedure is a long-term one, and Nadal is expected to visit a specialist next week to undergo a radiofrequency nerve ablation. The outcome of the procedure would determine whether he gets to feature in the next Wimbledon or not.
